Work Permit
The process to obtain the work authorization can take several months, from a minimum of 3 months to more than 6 months. Once issued, the EAD is usually valid for 2 or 3 years (depending on the length of the visa or of the IMF employee’s contract).
The HR department has hired a law firm (Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, LLP) to help IMF spouses submit their applications. The HR department will help you get in touch with them and receive the checklist of all the documents needed to complete a successful application. IMF spouses must follow scrupulously the guidelines, or they will risk seeing their application rejected.
IMF spouses who have an EAD pay state and federal taxes on their income. In order not to experience delays in the process of renewal of the EAD, taxes must be filed timely, and under the Form 1040NR. Many of remembers prefer to hire an accountant who has substantial expertise in matters. IMFFA can provide accountants recommended by fellow members upon request.
